Principal Trombone, Budapest MÁV Symphony Orchestra
& Member of SzEged TRombone ENsemble
Born in 1993 in Szeged, Hungary, Zoltán Czirok began his musical studies at the age of four. After starting on violin and percussion, he chose the trombone in 2006, following in his father’s footsteps. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Szeged under György Gyivicsan and József Vörös, and later earned his master’s degree at the Liszt Academy in Budapest with Dr. Gusztáv Hőna.
Zoltán has received numerous national and international awards, including First Prize at the Varaždin International Music Competition (2016), Second Prize at the “Città di Chieri” International Trombone Competition (2018), and Second Prize at the National “Corpus” Trombone Competition (2016, where no First Prize was awarded). Earlier successes include prizes at the International Trombone Competition in Brno (2011, 2013) and the National Secondary School Trombone Competition (2009). As a chamber musician, he earned the Grand Prize at the In Medias Brass International Chamber Music Competition (2017) and several additional awards in Chieri, Italy.
Since 2015, Zoltán has been a member of the Budapest MÁV Symphony Orchestra, where he was appointed Principal Trombone in 2017. He has also performed as a guest artist with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Hungarian National Philharmonic, Concerto Budapest, Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Hungarian State Opera.
An equally important part of his career is his work with the internationally active SzegEd Trombone Ensemble, of which he is a core member. With the ensemble, he has performed around the world, released seven acclaimed albums, and participated in leading festivals and conferences, establishing the group as one of the most recognized trombone ensembles globally.
In 2021, he was awarded the prestigious Annie Fischer Performing Arts Scholarship in recognition of his artistry and his dedication to promoting the trombone as a solo instrument.
