Lisa Albrecht, New York free lance; Excelsior Trombone Ensemble; formerly NY Phil, MN Orch, says ...
...This is one of the finest horns and valve sections I have had the pleasure of playing. Finally there's a valve that does what it's supposed to do, without compromising the sound or feel of the open horn. Whether I am using the Greenhoe-Conn components or my vintage Conn bell/slide, there is an evenness, clarity, projection, and ease to the response of the complete instrument; and I don't have to worry about the valve not functioning properly. Their craftsmanship and service are also first rate. Thanks to Gary for reminding us all what a trombone can be.

...Never have I played a valve system that provided so many positives without a negative. The Greenhoe system that I applied to my Bach 42 turned a very good instrument into an amazing instrument. The horn now plays with a sound and response that I have never experienced even on a straight horn. This is the valve system that we've all been waiting for. Thanks to Gary and the gang.

...I had my valve installed during Christmas 2002. When I had the chance to play my Bach 42 again, it was a different instrument. So many things had changed. I was more comfortable with the response of the instrument. Other section players and chamber musicians noticed that my sound had more presence and projected in both orchestral and chamber music. As for the mechanics of the valve, they are flawless. I had considered buying a new instrument, but rather took my old one and renewed it. I want to thank Kari (Sundström) for turning me on to the valve and Gary for his help and excellent work on the install. This is a valve for all horns!

...I couldn't be happier with my Greenhoe Conn bell section. It's simply the most versatile yet consistent bell section I've ever played. It has the carrying power to work for orchestral settings, yet is colorful enough to use for solo and chamber settings. And the valve, which has worked flawlessly, allows for easy low playing while still maintaining focus in that register. All of this, combined with the beauty of the craftsmanship, makes this the best piece of equipment I've ever owned. I look forward to playing this bell section for years to come.

...Like so many others, I have been impressed with how much my Greenhoe valve has improvemed a very good straight horn. Tim Anderson (Dayton Philharmonic) and I play-tested every combination of our straight Bach 42s, changing slides, tuning slides, mouthpieces, and braces, but when we finally put our Greenhoe valves back on, both instruments easily outstripped any possible combination of our trombones without the valve. Talk about beyond expectations!

...The Greenhoe valve simply outplays every valve on the market. It's open and free blowing, yet offers the bite that rotary valves have. Finally there's a valve that can make a good instrument great, and make a great instrument even better.

...I love my Greenhoe-Bach 42. It responds beautifully over the entire range of the horn, regardless of the dynamic. In addition, the valve is both open and responsive, combining the best qualities of both the traditional rotor and the Thayer. Thank you Gary for building such a wonderful instrument, and thank you Glenda for your wonderful customer service and appreciation.

...I had a Greenhoe valve section added to my horn immediately following the ITF in Denton, so I am about to celebrate my two-year anniversary. The transformation produced amazing results. What's not to like about a beautifully crafted mechanism with a short throw, fast action, quick response, and a free-blowing sound characteristic. Pitches produced on the open horn and with the valve match perfectly in response, timbre, and feel, and after years of heavy use, the valve section still looks and plays like new and is relatively maintenance free. Thanks Gary for making my musical life so much easier!

Craig Bryant, Music Educator/Freelance Musician, San Francisco, CA, says ...
...My Greenhoe-Conn has exceeded every expectation I had when selecting a new trombone. It is exceptionally well crafted, and has the perfect balance of "old school" warm sound and modern response and consistency through all registers that I was looking for. I have never played a horn where I could physically feel the vibrations passing through it. My Greenhoe horn has a strong vitality reflected not only in its sound, but in its feel to the player.
Gary's custom slide crook is a fine example of taking something good and making it great. It made the horn sing. On top of a fantastic horn, the customer service is first rate. This is simply the best experience playing or buying a trombone I have ever had.

Dennis Bubert, Bass Trombone, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, says ...
...My first experience with the Greenhoe valves was in 2002 after visiting with Gary at his booth at the International Trombone Festival in Denton. I had been playing Thayer valves on both my Bach and Edwards horns for almost twenty years, and, frankly, I never thought I'd be interested in trying anything else. I loved the free-blowing feel of the axial-flow valves and the big, open sound they produced. Still, a number of things were changing for us in the orchestra--we had a new music director, a great new hall, and my two colleagues had just recently switched to the new Conn 88H's . I found myself becoming increasingly unhappy with how my sound fit into our particular situation, and went through a number of bells and slides without ever considering that my dissatisfaction might be with the valves.
After just a few minutes playing on Gary's valves, I knew that there was something there worth exploring, and following a trip to Gary's shop, I started the 2002-2003 season with a set of Greenhoe valves on my horn. The improvement in response, clarity, and focus was immediately noticeable--and not just by me. The rest of the section noticed, of course--but so did other colleagues in the brass section, the double-basses, and our music director.
We found that with Gary's valves the sound projected beautifully (something we had struggled with in our hall on our previous instruments) and the articulations had a clear crisp quality that had previously been elusive. As an added benefit, the Greenhoe valves "slotted" beautifully, helping create a pitch center that our tubist could easily hear and tune with.
So, after an extended six-month audition, I was sold. I now have two Greenhoe valve sections--my original set and a second section on a new custom Greenhoe/Conn 62H which has become my everyday instrument in the orchestra.
I would encourage anyone who values musical qualities such as beauty of tone, projection, and clarity of sound to check out the creatively engineered, marvelously crafted instruments of Gary Greenhoe.

...After using the rest bar for a few months I don't know how I lived without one before. And Gary's ability to bring a dead horn back to life was amazing. His shop can turn that old clunker into a true classic. I loved the work done on the bass so much that I got a double tenor to compliment it. I'm really looking forward to future projects with the Greenhoe team.

..I attended the Eastern Trombone workshop specifically to find a well playing and crafted Bach 42 trombone. I was a little nervous because I had not purchased a large bore horn in 28 years and the market has changed dramatically since my high school days.

After trying several horns with different valves and combinations of bells and slides at the workshop, a respected teacher of mine that I had not seen for a while suggested I try a Greenhoe Trombone and that "I couldn't go wrong" with one of their horns. I was immediately impressed with the personal attention that Glenda Greenhoe and Michael McLemore gave me at the Greenhoe booth. Michael and Glenda just answered my questions and explained the process they go through in manufacturing their horns. In addition, Mr. Greenhoe talked to me about the design of the Greenhoe valve. Once I had auditioned the Greenhoe Bach 42 it was an easy decision. The decision was easy because the Greenhoe craftsmanship is second to none and in my opinion it was by far the best playing horn at the 2004 Eastern Trombone workshop. Due to the high quality of customer service, craftsmanship and the fact that the Greenhoe Bach-42 is the best horn that I have ever played, I am more than satisfied with my investment and I am sure that I will have many years of enjoyment with my Greenhoe Bach 42. Thank you Greenhoe Co.!

Elliot Chasanov, Professor of Trombone, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Former trombone soloist, The US Air Force Band, Washington, DC , says ...
...I have been playing the Greenhoe valve exclusively now for about 9 years (in various permutations). The valve is absolutely, without a doubt the free-est most open blowing valve I have ever played. After 12 years of axial valve playing, I was finding that the valve caused the instruments they were mounted on to lose both focus and "immediacy" or presence.

The Greenhoe valve is amazing in both areas, it truly causes the horn to focus, maybe even more than a straight horn!

I now play a Greenhoe tuning-in-slide trombone. It allows the greatest flexibility, color and range of dynamics I have ever found. Each time I pick it up, I am even more amazed.

Don't buy another horn without first trying Greenhoe Trombones!

Bravo Gary!!!

...Dear Ralph and Gary,

I promised that I would get back to you after trying out the "Bar" and the "Brace" for a couple of weeks. I have some very good news to bring you. Both work very very well for me.

First the Bar:

I adjusted the Bar several times in a 10 minute period to get it just right for my grip on my Shires trombone (with Greenhoe valve!!!). Having a very large hand with long, narrow fingers has made holding just about any trombone for more than 5 minutes an experience in torture. Finally, I can hold the trombone up ithout it sliding all over the place in my hand. The Bar allows the weight of the instrument to be supported in a much better place for me. No longer do I have to squeeze harder as I get tired. I can just open my hand up while playing and let the blood flow back. This action keeps my hand from tiring out quickly. This is especially noticeable with brass quintet, and other small ensemble playing where the horn does not come off the face for the entire work sometimes. The workmanship is exquisite, it looks good with the instrument, it fits in the case (very important, as I use a hard case) and is easily adjustable. It's one hell of a piece of equipment! Way to go Gary!

I will be recommending the Bar to all my students and colleagues. Thanks for the new additions to the "plumbing".

Best wishes,
Gordon

Over the past five months, I've felt an increasing comfort in playing my instrument, and my colleagues have noticed and appreciated the difference in sound production (more overtones, more clarity). The only thing more wonderful than the craftsmanship of your fine valves is the customer support with which you back your product. I have played many different instruments through the years and am very satisfied with my Greenhoe Valve on a Bach 42. It is an exceptionally clean, efficient sound with a crystalline upper register. The valve, with its wonderfully short, positive throw, produces a timbre that matches the lower open-horn better than any valve I have tried. The customer relations are second to none. ...Dear Gary and Glenda,

I will be celebrating the one month anniversary of receiving my Greenhoe valve section this week, and I have to say definitively that the honeymoon is not over!

I was a bit apprehensive about moving from a dependent rotary valve section that I was happy with to the independent Greenhoe's, but along with everything I expected, I got even more. The throw of the valve levers is short and efficient, the slurs in and out of the valves are clean and fast, and try as hard as I can, it's tough to feel much difference between the open horn and either of the valves. Maybe I shouldn't mention this, but I can move more air with your valves and play a bit louder (I didn't mention your name to the viola section!).

All of the notes seem to be locking in better (due, no doubt to the skills of your two shop wizards Al and Jared), and the straight pipe you made for me is fantastic!! I would recommend that to every bass trombonist! In addition to making the horn lighter, the straight pipe forces me to work on slide technique!

I've noticed that my different bells all resonate better...could that be due to your sonic suspension bracing? I don't like getting technical, so I'll just say it's a real pleasure playing your valves and have a great year. It was a real pleasure getting the personal touch and expertise you give all your customers! Let anyone know, if they are ever in this area (southeast Michigan) and want to give my valves a try, to give me a call...they can try 'em, but they can't have 'em!!

Thanks Sincerely,
Randy Hawes bass trombone, Detroit Symphony Orchestra

...My Greenhoe-Bach is by far the most satisfying bass trombone I have ever played. The response is even in all registers of the horn, providing flexibility and ease in terms of articulation and dynamics. The valves are fast and open allowing this bass trombone to play like one marvelous instrument, not three different instruments. I have the confidence this horn will respond every time, no matter how soft the entrance. The stress free design of Greenhoe construction allows you to feel the response throughout the instrument. I would say this is, for trombone players, the Greenhoe answer to the great Cremona legacy. The sound is rich and chocolaty and I am happy playing my Greenhoe-Bach for hours on end. ...I just wanted to drop you a line with some feedback about how my new Greenhoe valve section works with my Edwards bass trombone. In a word - GREAT! I don't know what you did, but it seems to me that you really got it right. The more I play, the better the sound and playing characteristics become. Better tonal center, more overtones, quicker attacks and more resonance are immediately apparent. The sound seems to be at once more 'present' in most ensembles, and 'prettier'. It is easy to tune to, yet provides plenty of sheer power to support a full orchestral Brass and Wind section. And it fills out the section sound at very low volumes in a way that adds 'shimmer' to the sound. I'm very impressed.
I've experimented with various mouthpiece, leadpipe, slide and bell combinations, too. I've discovered that the basic sound does not change much no matter which combination I use, perhaps because the horn is now producing more high overtones. However, there are subtle differences, especially in volume and 'weight' with different equipment options. This is great - I can select the equipment that best suits the musical style of a piece without having to worry about adapting to grossly different sounds. Great job!

..."This is better than I remember," was my joyous response immediately after blowing my first note on my Greenhoe enhanced Bach 42. With one note, I knew the upgrade I sought in my horn was already in my hands.
My Greenhoe valves seem to get faster every time I oil them. I've not experienced anything like that.
The Rest Bar is ingenious. My horn seems to float in my hand. It defuses holding/lifting my Bassbone into a non-issue.
The two different valve caps Gary offers subtly, yet clearly lean the color of my Greenhoe enhanced horns. The metal cap offers a broad manly sound and the lexan cap provides a quicker responding more centered sound. The difference is there, I can't explain it. What a cool tool to have at my discretion.

...This is my second horn with a Greenhoe valve on it if that says anything there. I started playing a Shires with a Thayer about five years ago, and could not get use to the difference in how felt compared to my Benge 190F I played previous to it. Mark Fisher told me about Gary's valve and I made the drive up to check them out. I was amazed at how open yet still compact the sound was. It played free and even through all the registers. I played my Shires with the new valve for about two more years before deciding I wanted to fit in around town with a Bach. I purchased a 42G with a Hageman and dropped it off a week later to have the conversion done. It plays amazing, and the conversion looks flawless. Also this new valve had some upgrades and slight alterations that made it perform even better. Gary and his shop are doing beautiful work, and are so easy and friendly to work with. They all have a very detailed knowledge of the trombone and its workings. The Greenhoe valve gives me the projection I need to get to the back of a hall while performing in orchestra, and the daintiness I need to play light French pieces while in Quartet. It provides me with a very even and clear response throughout the entire horn. I may switch horns or bells again, but I will always play a Greenhoe valve section. Thanks Gary, Glenda, Mike, and Brian!

Using it between the Dallas Wind Symphony and the regional orchestras I play in, it seems to match every musical challenge offered. Every tuba player that I have sat next to since getting this horn, has agreed it is a better blend between the two of us than the other instruments I had been using.

It is also much lighter in weight than my other horns therefore easier on the left hand. The valves are just a joy to blow through! Thanks for your efforts in making making these instruments of superior craftmanship. I look forward to what improvements lie ahead (not that there is much room to go!)

The new valve is without a doubt the most open and free blowing that I have ever tried. I truly have the best of both worlds in one instrument. Open, and yet with just the right amount of resistance.

I feel that the Greenhoe Valve sections have helped me move my playing to another level that I would not have achieved as easily on other valve sections. I find myself not having to work as hard in ensembles. Not only has the valve register been enhanced, but the sound of the open horn greatly improved as well with the addition of the valve section. I cannot see myself playing on any other valves in the future, and I would recommend the Greenhoe valves to anyone who is looking to improve their playing. In addition to great craftmanship, the Greenhoes are wonderful people to do business with.

...I cannot explain how excited I am to be able to play the horn again! In all of my years of trombone playing, I have NEVER played an instrument that was actually easy to play. The amount of tension in my playing has decreased dramatically because of this instrument. Consequently, I am able to do things on that horn that I have never been able to do before! You folks really have constructed a magnificent display of not only craftmenship, but also art.

The most responsive instrument I ever played. The sound is warm without getting too dark and also contains the clarity that I look for in a tenor trombone. The Greenhoe slide not only looks good - with the little trimmings; it also performs really well! The Greenhoe slide crook does away with the need for the Brace - very practical.

I prefer to play on Greenhoe Optimized Bach trombones for the majority of my work in the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops because of the complexity of sound and consistent craftsmanship. ...For many years I owned a 1968 Bach 42 straight trombone which I used as a backup horn. I would practice on it occasionally but it mainly occupied closet space because although it played well, it never played great. I could best categorize it's playing characteristics as stiff and dull in both response and sound. After trying a few Greenhoe trombones at a convention I decided to have Gary Greenhoe add one of his valves to this Bach 42 trombone. I figured in a worse case scenario, if it still maintained the same playing characteristics I could at least sell it and recoup most of the cost of the conversion. Fortunately I have no need to sell this instrument. The Bach-Greenhoe 42 trombone now plays better than ever. It is like a completely new trombone. The partials slot extremely well and the bell has a great resonance that was never there before. It is now anything but stiff and dull. The valve works flawlessly and performs as advertised. This trombone is now my main horn instead of a "backup" instrument. I could not be happier with the expert service and quality provided by Gary Greenhoe and his staff.

...When I received my Greenhoe valve section, I was instantly struck by two factors: the quick throw and the feeling of positive engagement. It is difficult to put into words. You really have to play it to fully appreciate how different this instrument plays. To me, engaging the valve feels almost like pushing a button to instantly activate a solenoid. The note is there INSTANTLY, like a gear dropping into place. No hesitation and no uncertainty. There are other great valves out there, but this one provides a level of security I've not felt with the other valves. I was instantly taken with the double tenor. Gary built mine to tune the second valve in G. I believe this is the ideal combination. It is unbelievable how many difficult technical passages become easy when using that G valve aggressively and the F & G valves together have plenty of length to get the low B in tune. Other than a small amount of extra weight, I see no downside to this arrangement. It is all upside. Two years later, I am just as passionate about this double tenor as the first day it arrived. I mostly use the valve section in a small bass configuration. In my judgment is it a great choice for the bottom part of a big band, easily delivering an extra helping of that bass trombone "bark" so much of the literature expects. But as tastes are changing on the orchestra scene, I find myself using this instrument more and more in the third chair. I used it on Holst where the conductor wanted sizzling lines from the bass, and it is my first choice for any pops repertoire.

...I just can't say enough good about this trombone. I have been playing a Getzen/Edwards Thayer for a few years and often had difficulty with "slotting" in and finding a center to the pitch. I received the greenhoe just a week before a concert weekend and found it to be perfect. Easy transition, no problem with "slotting", easy to center the pitch. Anyone who knows the variety of music a british style brass band plays will realize the versatility the player and instrument must have. This horn does it all excellently. Lots of comments from other members of the band as well as audience members. Great horn!

...When Conn decided to reinvent the 62-H a few years back, they created one of the most versatile, playable horns on the market today. By adding Gary Greenhoe's well designed rotary valves, one has the option of playing the best blowing inline bass trombone I've had the pleasure of trying. But Gary didn't stop there. He has created a new version of the 62-H which is based on the legendary Conn "Fuchs" model. This "slide tuning" horn is astonishing. It's so well balanced throughout the entire range and so efficient that I couldn't believe the sound and response I was getting.

I use this horn on symphonic film recording sessions and pop and jazz record dates. I use it in my brass quintet and trombone quartet rehearsals and performances. I've played jazz quartet gigs on this horn with a rhythm section. It works well in any setting. If you can imagine the right sound, this horn can help you produce it. From the stock Conn 62-H to the Conn/Greenhoe "Fuchs" model, today's player has a wide choice of features as well as prices for beautiful playing bass trombones.

It's a good time to be a bass trombonist.

...Unlike many others who have complete custom trombones built, I had the Greenhoe technicians build an instrument around two of my 25 year old Bach bells I like very much. This meant that they would fit a double valve system to my bells and manufacture a custom slide.
Valve section: The valves blow very freely and the sound is rich and full. They are as open as any on the market but they retain the characteristics of the sound that I have not been able to achieve on any other instrument. They blow very freely, but fortunately don't feel like I'm falling into the instrument...as with some other valve systems I've tried. The match between the new and the old is excellent. The valve section not only plays well, but is solidly build and even visually pleasing. I also appreciate the offset tuning slide, which undoubtedly contributes to the exceptional playing quality of the valve-bell section.
Slide: It is very fast and smooth for a regular-weight slide. The yellow brass tubes/gold brass crook is a very good combination: it handles volume well and joins with the valve section to create a sound and response I was hoping for.
Overall: I believe I am now playing the perfect instrument for me, thanks to Gary, Mike, Brian, Glenda, et al. All aspects of the instrument are the highest quality I have every played. I owned my old custom horn for 25+ years and I played a lot of valves, bells, slides, etc. (and countless combinations) before I decided to go with Greenhoe. The quality of workmanship is very high (thanks to Mike and Brian). The thoughtfulness and care in design is manifested every time I play the instrument (thanks, Gary). The handling of customer service was prompt, pleasant, and very helpful (thanks, Glenda). When there was something I asked to be adjusted, they did so quickly and to my expectations.
Thanks for creating an excellent instrument for me. Now, it is up to me to play it to its capacity.

Again, my heartfelt thank you for your wonderful product, fast service, and kind attention. Please tell Gary he is now one of my heroes. I sincerely believe that his many years of playing trombone with a fine orchestra (along with his considerable talents as an engineer) have given him insights that have greatly advanced the quality of trombones available today. ...Adding your valve and open-wrap tubing to my 42B--already a good horn--transformed it into a superb instrument. I have never played a trombone with such easy access to the lower trigger partials, and the short throw of the lever as part of the design adds a wonderful, silken smoothness to pitch changes through the valve. Your valve design makes the F side of the horn a dream to play and even improves the B-flat side! The quality of the workmanship is incredible! ...For most of my playing career, I followed the lead of one of my teachers, Carl Wilhelm (former principal with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra), and eschewed the convenience of an F attachment for the sound quality of a straight trombone. Playing the first trombone parts years ago in The United States Army Band and more recently in the Washington [PA] Symphony Orchestra and our local community band, I could comfortably exist without a valve. In fact, I found I used my alto trombone more than I needed a tenor with an F attachment. When I joined Murray Crewe's trombone choir this year, I discovered that I actually needed an instrument with a valve. I remembered how impressed I was with the Greenhoe valve when I tried your instruments in Ithaca and New Orleans. I played a variety of instruments with all types of valves, and nothing even came close to the sound quality I was able to produce on a Greenhoe. The choice was obvious. My Bach 42 seems to play even better with the Greenhoe valve than it did as a straight horn before the conversion. The response and projection in all registers and at all dynamic levels is very consistent and open. Your husband must be something of a magician because it almost seems as if the once inanimate metal has come now come to life. Conductors and colleagues have noticed the difference and complimented me on the sound. To say I am well-pleased with the result is an understatement. The Greenhoe straight section is also fantastic and seems enable me to project the sound to the back of the hall almost effortlessly. I'm so glad I opted to purchase your straight section rather that to have you reconfigure the braces on the existing one. Again, thank you very much for the outstanding work and excellent service.

...I have been using Greenhoe valves for about a year, on my Bach formerly 50B3. What an amazing difference in the tone quality and response of this Greenhoe conversion. It plays with such clarity and ease, in all registers. It turns a Bach 50B into a "killer" big band horn, and has that "presence" and quick response that is needed in the contemporary big band literature. What a wonderful encouragement to practice the bass trombone! Thank you Gary and your staff, for the wonderful workmanship on this valve section. You are all at the top of your craft!

...Everything I've been hearing about your sections turned out to be completely true and to a greater degree than I expected…very unusual (just like The Brace). The throw is surprisingly quick and short, and my thumb fits perfectly around the trigger so I can rest the spot just behind my knuckle against the cross bar, putting it in the ideal position for leverage, making the trigger throw that much easier. The section just feels nice and solid (both in the tactile and acoustic sense). I can support quiet notes and crank out serious volume more easily. The transition from open to trigger (particularly notable in low registers) is agile and seamless. The biggest surprise to me, though… it really does play just as open through the valve and the F section as an open horn. I was very skeptical about that in particular. You guys really have this whole "F section shtick" down in every detail. Needless to say, I'm highly impressed and couldn't be more pleased.

...Finally there is a valve on the market that does what it's told to do. Along the years I've had Thayers on my Bach-42 ( maybe three or four different sections ) and every one of them has quit on me. When Bach came out with the Hagmann Valve, I had really high expectations. The action was incredible but it was lacking something in the sound. I have been playing Gary's creation now over half a year and it just keep getting better and better. I have a 1960 Mt. Vernon which works beautifully together with Greenhoe valve. The sound on trigger notes is as one would be playing a straight horn. The actual action of the valve is flawless which give me peace of mind, not having to worry all the time when it will fail. What I really like about the valve is that I feel like I have a control over the instrument rather than it has control over me. There are so many different instruments out on market today that play only one way. This business of adding massive amounts of weight and what not, has had an adverse effect on the development of brass instruments. This valve is a step toward 'the good old times' when they knew how to build instruments with beautiful craftsmanship, care and something that will last. Thank you so much Gary!

“I had only heard positive comments about Greenhoe Inc, mostly about the valve system and how centered the notes sound while using it. It has also been a goal of mine to own a great Bach but living in New Zealand and the expense of traveling to the United States to try and find one was out of the question. So on discovering the reputation of Greenhoe I took a chance that they could provide me with a great Bach, guaranteed.

I found it difficult to buy a trombone having not tried it and was also concerned that by the time I got it to New Zealand the chance of returning it would expensive and timely.

I can not rave about the trombone that was made for me enough and any fears I may have had were completely squashed.  I now own a GREAT Bach! (A Greenhoe Bach) So many things that are missing in today’s consumer world, Craftsmanship, attention to detail, pride in work, quality and service are at the forefront of the Greenhoe Inc. and I haven’t even begun to talk about how this instrument plays and sounds. ...My new trombone is a gorgeous instrument! (Greenhoe-Conn bass, Yellow brass double valve, red brass slide crook) The sound is what I was looking for - and the valve section every bit as good as the most glowing reports I've read. I can discern no difference in sound or feel between the open side and the valve side of the instrument. If this horn isn't perfect, someone else will have to find a flaw, as I can see nothing less than perfection! There are other fine instruments manufactured, and there may be performers who prefer other instruments, but there are no more meticulous craftsmen than what I observed at your facility, anywhere! In my 30 years as a machinest/tool & die maker, I have never dealt with craftsmen with such a keen eye for details. My hat is off to you for providing an environment that fosters such attention to the most minute details! ...Bass Trombonist with Opera Australia for the last 14 years, and a qualified Band Instrument Repair Technician for the last 7 years. I've tried every valve out there, in the dual role of professional trombonist and repair tech recommending equipment to clients, and have sold them all, except my Greenhoe valves. In fact I have converted all my horns (1969 Conn 62H, 1968 Bach 50BG, 2000 Bach 42G, with the 1975 Conn 88H heading for "the chop" very soon) to Greenhoe valve sections.
Why? Because the Greenhoe valve allows the horn to deliver the essential character of sound designed into it, without taking any of those qualities away. Other valves on the market change the sound, and rob essential overtones from the middle and upper spectrum, making the sound thin, or hollow, and less "full." I can say this because I had my two Bachs set up with detachable valves, allowing me to play four different types of valve on the one bell, handslide, tuning slide combination. Blindfold tests were conclusive, and the Greenhoe was the valve of choice, both for player and listener. On top of this, the mechanism is a tried and trusted one which operates just like a standard rotor, is quick, short and easy to maintain.
After searching long and hard for a valve that would allow me, and the horns I play, to make the sound I want, I've settled with Greenhoe. It will take something extra-ordinary to make me change this decision, too!
Matthew has worked with such groups as The Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Queensland Philharmonic, John Morrison's "Swing City Big Band" (sharing the stage with James Morrison), and was a member of Australian Youth Orchestra in 1991.

That valve section and bell combination is the most open and easily centered combination I have ever used. If I didn't know that my fingers were moving, I'd be hard pressed to know when the valve section kicked in... there is such a great consistency from the open horn through the valves and into the pedals. And that straight pipe section that you created is every bit as frightening as you had said, and then some. Needless to say, I am having the time of my life, thanks to you. Thank you very much.

...I don't know how to thank you for these wonderful valves you have sent me. Mike McLemore's work is just as meticulous as his playing. He is a real perfectionist. I liked it so much, that right after it was stolen, I went ahead and ordered another one. Thank you for getting it to me in two weeks time. Then I recovered the stolen trombone, and now I have two, but my second one is not for sale. I like having a backup, and I am too attached to them both. My students call them the "twins," and they have names for them.
The valve blows so freely that I use the alternates for low A and Ab more frequently, and in that way it has enhanced my playing and technique in the low register, especially when playing legato. The valve doesn't "pop" when transitioning back and forth. The throw is very small, which I like, and I have grown accustomed to it.
My low register F through low C responds better from ppp to fff, and the articulations are cleaner.
Overall, this valve has opened up more options for me as a player. I love it. Oh, and did I mention it's QUIET?
