Tubing Wrap Information

Gary has researched the wrap of trombones for over 30 years. In designing the wrap for the Greenhoe Valve Section, we used his minimum bend radius and applied it not only to the wrap, but to the entrance and exit of the valve itself. We found that any number of bends in the system could be considered "sonically transparent", provided the bends were at or larger than the minimum bend radius.

Many people have asked why we have a 90 degree bend in our wraps. The answer is threefold:

  1. We determined a place that would accomodate approximately 98% of players. This means that some players will feel the valve section tubing on their neck, but most will not.
  2. The shape of the tubing wrap is optimized for the sound of the Greenhoe section. This was detemined with extensive testing.
  3. We have designed the wrap to have an aesthetic beauty and the ability to be recognized. People can recognize a Greenhoe Valve Section or Trombone from the audience.

Finally, we have two different materials for the valve section tubing: yellow or red brass. We have discovered that opposites attract - red or gold brass bells seem to like yellow sections, and yellow bells play remarkably well with a red section. Sterling bells seem to play best with a red section.
